Honesty is the best policy

The roadside produce stand with an honesty box for cash payment has been a hallmark of the New Zealand countryside for generations.

Roadside stalls are a convenient way for lifestyle block owners to supplement their income and avoid wastage when they have surplus produce on their hands. The good old-fashioned honesty box system in all its guises – from ice-cream containers to a bolted down toolbox – waits to receive notes, coins or IOU notes. It’s a Kiwi tradition.
